Massive 7.5-magnitude Earthquake!

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Argentina near southern Chile, sparking tsunami concerns. The quake occurred around 200 kilometers south of Puerto Williams at a depth of 10 kilometers.

Several aftershocks followed. U.S. and Chilean agencies warned of possible tsunami waves up to 9 feet along Chile’s southern coast and up to 3 feet in Antarctica.

Chile’s disaster agency (SENAPRED) ordered evacuations in the Magallanes Region, with footage showing residents leaving coastal areas and Punta Arenas in large numbers.

President Gabriel Boric urged people to follow official instructions, noting all government resources were being mobilized. Officials confirmed the Falkland Islands are not at risk.

Chile, prone to major quakes due to tectonic plate boundaries, previously experienced devastating earthquakes in 1960 and 2010, both followed by destructive tsunamis
