Most People Don’t Know This…
Did you know that quarters from 1964 and earlier are 90% silver?
Many collectors already keep those for their silver value — but there’s a secret detail hiding on some 1956 through 1964 quarters that can make them far more valuable than just their silver content.
This hidden variety is known as the Type B Reverse — and it could turn your $5 silver coin into a $40–$50 collector’s piece!
How to Identify a Type B Silver Quarter (1956 – 1964)
Follow these simple steps to check your quarters:
Flip to the Reverse (Back) Side
- Look at the word STATES in “UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.”
- Focus on the spacing between the E and S — it should be slightly wider than normal.
Check the Word “DOLLAR”
- Look at the leaf below the letter A in DOLLAR.
- If the leaf touches the A, you’ve got the Type B reverse!
Compare with a Regular Quarter
- On a standard silver quarter, that leaf sits slightly away from the A.
- On the Type B, it connects.
That small detail makes all the difference!
How Much Are Type B Quarters Worth?
| Condition | Approx. Value |
|---|---|
| Average Circulated | |
| High-Grade (Uncirculated) | |
| Proof-like Example |
That’s a big jump from melt value — especially if you have a handful of 1956–1964 quarters sitting around!
Why This Error Exists
The Type B Reverse happened when the U.S. Mint accidentally used proof-coin dies on some business-strike quarters.
That’s why the spacing and leaf details look slightly different — and why collectors prize them so highly today.
Real-World Example
In the video clip, one viewer found a perfect Type B quarter just by checking her silver coins carefully.
Before, her coin was worth about $5 in silver — now it’s worth $40 – $50 because she spotted the detail!
Small finds like that add up fast for collectors who pay attention.
